Disease Symptom Tips :: Male Herpes Male Herpes: Treating Male Genital Herpes
Custom Search
Genital male herpes is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, which infects the skin and mucous membranes of the genitals. It's one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases and it enters the body through a break in the skin. Once you're infected, the virus can lay dormant for months and in some instances even years. During the dormant period, you will not experience any symptoms. Stress can activate the virus and lead to your first outbreak. A breakout will begin with an initial period of tenderness in and on the penis, followed by a rash of blisters or even just a single blister. Eventually the blisters will burst and become small ulcers or open sores. After two to three weeks, these will crust over and fall off. At which point, the outbreak is over. Some people will experience just a few herpes outbreaks over the course of their lives, some none at all and others will have regular outbreaks. However, episodes tend to decrease with age and also become less severe with each subsequent outbreak. For information on how to treat male herpes, both with traditional medicine and alternative methods, keep reading. Traditional Medication The primary drug used to treat herpes is called acyclovir, which is used during both initial and recurring outbreaks. Patients typically take the drug five times a day for about 7 to 10 days for their first episode and then for five days for recurring episodes. Other drugs that are used include valcyclovir and famcyclovir. Aloe Vera Aloe vera is not intended to cure herpes, however it can be used to treat the blisters that accompany a herpes outbreak. Simply take the aloe gel from a freshly cut leaf and apply it directly to the affected and blistered area. If you don't have access to fresh gel, you can buy packaged gel from most pharmacies or health food stores. Licorice Licorice root extracts will not cure herpes, but they can reduce pain and even speed up your healing time. Licorice, which has anti-viral properties, is a demulcent that will coat and smooth the skin. You can buy licorice as a cream, lotion or ointment, but look for one that includes glycyrrhizin, which can drastically improve the healing time of herpes lesions. Burrow's Solution Burrow's solution can be purchased over the counter and when applied with a cool compress four to six times a day, it can help relieve pain and promote the healing process. Again, it will not cure male herpes. Other pain-relief methods include taking a cool path or ingesting basic pain relievers. See also: All Site Articles for Disease Symptom Tips
