Arthritis is a painful condition of the joints, however herbal treatment for arthritis is an option. There are several different types of the disease – many are inflammatory while others are more degenerative in nature.

And though it's unknown what triggers arthritis, some natural remedies can be used to treat the condition or at least reduce the pain and other symptoms.

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include pain and stiffness in the joints, particularly the knees and hips and tender joints throughout the body. There is no standard treatment for arthritis.

However, conventional and alternative therapies typically aim to slow down the progressive deterioration as much as possible. To learn more about natural, herbal treatment for arthritis, keep reading for an overview of some popular treatment methods.

Devils' Claw

Devil's Claw is a bitter root that's used as medicine to relieve arthritic pain and improve joint mobility. Clinical studies have shown devil's claw to be most effective when taken in higher doses of 3-6 grams of powdered herb or 600-1200 mg of a 5:1 powdered extract every day. If  you have been diagnosed with peptic ulcers or acute gallbladder disease, do not take devil's claw.

Mustard and Counter-irritant Herbs

One approach to decrease inflammation and pain is to use a counter-irritant intended to increase circulation and move toxins away from the joint space. Mustard powder is a powerful counter-irritant and is typically combined with 5 parts corn starch and a small amount of water to create a paste that is then topically applied to the affected joint.

Once the paste is made, smear it on and cover it with a sheet of gauze. Cover it with a hot pack and leave it on for 15-20 minutes. Keep an eye on the treated area for a potential allergic reaction.

Turmeric and Indian Frankincense

Two herbs that are used as gentle, long-term, natural anti-inflammatories are turmeric and Indian frankincense. The powdered rhizome in turmeric inhibits the formation of inflammatory compounds and acts as a strong antioxidant to heal the joint tissues.

Fish Oil

Doctors and herbalists recommend taking 4-7 grams of fish oil (EPA and DHA) every day. It is thought to be very beneficial to the joints as a lubricant and acts as an anti-inflammatory.

Acupuncture

While not an herbal treatment for arthritis, acupuncture is a natural remedy that can help ease the pain and discomfort of arthritis. Acupuncture treatment for arthritis is typically ongoing because arthritis is a chronic condition. Generally, treatments will increase mobility, reduce inflammation and pain and slow down degradation.
