To learn more about minimizing the first symptoms of menopause, keep reading.

Hot Flashes

One of the most common first symptoms of menopause, hot flashes affect about three-quarters of menopausal women. Women often report feeling a glowing sensation or intense heat that's often accompanied by sweating.

Some women may experience hot flashes multiple times a day while others may only have a few bursts every few weeks.

To combat hot flashes, try to stay away from sugary, spicy, salty or acidic foods or dishes. You should also avoid saturated or hydrogenated fats along with hot drinks, lots of caffeine or alcoholic beverages. Other foods like citrus-based fruits and soy-based foods have been shown to be effective in preventing hot flashes.

Regular physical exercise can also help fight hot flashes because it dramatically improves your body's circulation and can make your body more tolerant of extreme changes in internal temperature. Exercise will also help to increase the number of endorphins in your blood stream.

If you're experiencing hot flashes and want to cool down quickly, try taking a cool shower, running cold water over your wrists for several minutes, wiping yourself with wet wipes, running a battery-operated fan or even opening your freezer and standing in front of it.

Night Sweats

A hot flash night is often referred to as night sweats, causing you to wake up with soaking wet bed sheets and a feeling of terror or anxiety. To lessen the severity of night sweats, try sponging yourself off before you go to bed. Simply pay your face and chest with a damp washcloth. Also, be sure to control the temperature in your bedroom, buy keeping it below 65 degrees.

Fatigue

Fatigue is a common symptom associated as one of the first signs of menopause. It's often caused by sleep deprivation, possibly brought on by night sweats or other symptoms. It can also be caused by an increase in androgen levels (the male hormone). As a result, energy levels decrease along with our overall sense of well-being.

Your best defense is diet. Avoid large amounts of carbohydrates and try to stay away from large amounts of caffeine. To raise your blood sugar levels, eat complex carbohydrates and lots of vegetables with at least one good source of protein every day. Eating many small meals throughout the day can also help.

Another culprit is lack of exercise. Remember, energy begets energy, so fight off fatigue with exercise. Even a short, but brisk 15-minute walk can help improve your energy levels.

Concentration Problems

Concentration and memory problems are very common first symptoms of menopause. You're not going crazy, but hormones are wreaking havoc with your brain. Instead, focus on getting daily exercise (improves circulation), eating a better diet (improves brain function), and improved relaxation (soothes the mind).
