A birch pollen allergy is extremely common. Many people are even allergic to the birch tree volatiles that are released in the early spring, weeks or even months before the pollen itself is released, even these volatiles can affect certain people. If you suffer from a birch pollen allergy, keep reading for some tips and tricks that can help you combat your allergy and regain control of your life. Dry Laundry Inside During the pollen season, the best thing you can do is dry your laundry indoors. That way, birch pollen in the air won't stick to your clothes and aggravate the allergy. Stay Away From Pets Either keep your pets indoors or avoid stroking or petting them during pollen season. If you must, then brush and bathe your pets regularly, especially after they come inside from the outdoors. Close the Windows During pollen season, your best bet is to stay indoors and close the windows. Birch pollen is an afternoon pollen, meaning the majority of it is released between noon and 6pm. This is called a pollen shower, so make sure your windows are shut. Change Your Clothes Once you get home after being outside, change your clothes. If you walked home from work, they'll be coated in pollen. For an even more effective strategy, try rinsing your area or taking a shower. Many birch pollen allergy sufferers keep a spare set of indoor clothes for once they get home. Cover Your Furnishings One strategy is to cover your favorite chair and bed with a sheet during the day. Once night falls, fold the sheet up gently and wash it. This will, essentially, remove the layer of pollen that tends to accumulate during the day. Head to the Sea The beach and seashore are often pollen free due to onshore breezes and an overall lack of birch trees. Mountain peaks and ridges can also provide relief. Turn on the Air Conditioning Stop driving with your car windows rolled down. Instead, keep your car windows up and turn on the air conditioning during birch pollen season. You can even have a special air filter fitted on to your vehicle's air intake. Wear a Mask It may sound extreme, but wearing a mask can be extremely effective when outdoors during prime allergen and pollen season. A mask is particularly effective when you're running or exercising outdoors. Get a High End Vacuum Cleaner A really good vacuum cleaner, especially one with a HEPA filter, will help trap pollen and allergen particles and reduce pollen residue. If you have a strong birch pollen allergy, you may want to vacuum every day during allergy season. See also: All Site Articles for Disease Symptom Tips
