Concerning baby allergies, some children have adverse reactions to certain foods, such as cow's milk protein, lactose, sucrose, fish, eggs, and nuts. A food allergy is due to an inappropriate response by the body's immune system. Food intolerance or sensitivity produces similar symptoms, but generally does not involve the immune system. For an overview of some of the most common baby allergies, keep reading. Cow's Milk Protein Allergy Cow's milk protein is a common cause of an adverse reaction to food. The cause of the allergy is unknown, but the problem usually begins during the first year of life, between a week and several months after starting to drink cow's milk formula. It usually disappears by the time the child reaches 3 years old. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, crying and rare instances of anaphylactic shock. If you suspect your child has an allergy to cow's milk protein, take her to the doctor. Provided the initial reaction was mild, the doctor may recommend that you exclude all products containing cow's milk from your child's diet for two weeks. If the symptoms disappear, then your child will be given a small, trial amount of cow's milk. If the symptoms return, then your child will be diagnosed as allergic to cow's milk. Lactose and Sucrose Intolerance Children can be intolerant to two sugars – lactose, which is found in milk and sucrose, which is found in many fruits. These same children may also suffer from other baby allergies to different foods. The intolerances are due to a deficiency of the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose or sucrose in the small intestine. Both types of intolerance are usually temporary and may develop as a complication of an infection or other intestinal disorder, such as celiac disease. Symptoms of lactose and sucrose intolerance include diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting and crying. These symptoms typically appear within 6 hours of eating or drinking foods that contain lactose or sucrose. Your doctor may confirm the diagnosis of a food allergy by giving your child a special breath test. If a child is lactose intolerant, a dietitian can design a lactose-free or reduced-lactose diet. Your child may be able to tolerate milk products like cheese and yogurt. Specific Food Allergies If your baby is allergic to a specific food, it can be much harder to pinpoint. The most common types of baby allergies are fish, eggs, and nuts. Typically, your doctor will ask you to carry out a series of exclusionary tests where the suspected trigger foods are excluded from the diet and then reintroduced to test the allergic reaction.
