When a patient has arthritis, type of arthritis with which they are diagnosed can make a major difference. Experience with arthritis shows up in the form of painful joints, but there are many symptoms that can distinguish one condition from others.
Osteoarthritis
This is the best known arthritis type of disease, resulting in the degeneration of the joints. Elderly people generally experience this most. Despite this, osteoarthritis can surface younger in a person's life, possibly caused by an injury, hereditary or congenital disorder, metabolic disorder, or trauma.
With osteoarthritis, on facing bone there is a wearing away of the smooth cartilage, resulting in exposed ends forming new bone.
The overgrowth of this bony material is a confirmation on the diagnosis, often accompanied by pain when there is a shifting of joints along with and a sensation of grating known as “joint crepitus” when the bone ends that are both exposed and dry begin to rub against each other. Inflammation is not typically connected with Osteoarthritis.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
When assessing rheumatoid arthritis, the body joints are essentially attacked by the immune system just like it were an external foe.
This reaction of th auto-immune system is something of a chain reaction since there is an inflammation of the synovial joints, shifts fingers and thumbs apart, ligaments are weakened from the swelling, and alignment of muscles are damaged.
Disability or even deformity can be the result. Opening a bottle or can, graping a pencil to write, or shaking the hand of another person can become seemingly an insurmountable chore necessitating that both hands be utilized. This arthritis can worsen over time or possibly remain dormant for a number of years before degenerating.
Rheumatoid arthritis progresses through five different stages. Stage 1 generally has no symptoms and inflammation is detected by results from a lab. Stage 2 is when the immune system gears up, causing mild stiffness of the joints and other problems.
Stage 3 causes the synovial membrane to proliferate and drug treatments are often required. During Stage 4, this disease continues to spread to the cartilage and joint swelling becomes more pronounced. At Stage 5, irreversible destruction has been caused and the patient is typically under strong duress.
A conclusion of rheumatoid arthritis is typically founded on the existence of the following symptoms for a period longer than six weeks – stiffness of the joints after awakening, swelling in finger or joints of the wrists, soft tissue swelling around joints and swelling on each side of a joint.
Spondyloarthropathies
Spondyloarthropathies are a grouping of disorders which attack the spine and include psoriatic arthritis, Reiter's syndrome, ankylosing spondylitis, ankylosing spondylitis (causing a fusing of the bones in the spine), and intestinal arthropathy. Spondyloarthropathies affects over two and-a-half million adults in the U.S. and is the third most common type of arthritis.
